Its Palladian tradition has vertical proportions and elaborate details of the Victorian Era. The house has a weaving shop and a quilt and fabric shop while the barn houses two craft shops and a restaurant. HISTORY: Florissant was a French and German settlement when John Myers, a farmer and land speculator from Pottsdam, Pennsylvania married Adaline Hotten there in the 1800's. Mrs. Myers was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France but her family had moved to Florissant when she was six years old. Work had already begun on the home when Myers died in 1869 at the age of 49. The couple's third child was born 16 days after his death. The estate was tied up in court for more than a dozen years but Mrs. Myers managed to have the house completed. It fell into disrepair in the 1960's as plans were being developed to build I-170 through the area where the house and barn stand. GIFT SHOP: The house is home to Helen's Hen House quilt shop and The Weaving Dept. knitting and weaving shop. There's another shop within the barn that carries hand-crafted gifts, frames, Christmas ornaments, baby items and other things. WHERE TO GET LUNCH: The Barn Deli is open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The restaurant serves a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches as well as home made cakes and pies. WHAT'S NEARBY: Big Foot 4 x 4 -- the original monster truck -- and Lambert St. Louis International Airport are nearby. PUBLIC RELATIONS CONTACT: Joan Nicolay, 314-837-7661 |
