St. Louis Artists' Guild

DESCRIPTION: The St. Louis Artists' Guild, established in 1886, is the oldest and largest visual arts center in the Midwest. It promotes visual arts by presenting exhibitions and educational programs and sponsoring many national, regional and local competitions with cash awards. It also hosts national traveling exhibitions and participates in collaborative and exchange exhibitions with other art organizations. To give young artists an opportunity to compete and exhibit their work in a professional gallery, the Artists' Guild sponsors an annual exhibition with cash awards and scholarships. The Guild also serves as a network for artists in the St. Louis metropolitan area and offers classes in sketching, painting, sculpture and photography.

It has been sponsoring competitive exhibitions for more than a century giving new artists an opportunity to achieve their first recognition. In 1995, the Guild moved to its present location in Clayton's Oak Knoll Park in a building that had housed the St. Louis Museum of Science and Natural History until it became the Science Museum and moved to its Oakland Avenue location. The two large stone mansions in Oak Knoll Park-one occupied by the Artists' Guild and the other by the Clayton Early Childhood Learning Center-were built in the 1920's by two St. Louis businessmen.
