St. Louis AcesDESCRIPTION: The St. Louis Aces are a team of the World Team Tennis League. The League has teams in 10 cities. Local tennis teams play against top-name professional tennis stars during July and August. St. Louis Aces matches are played in Forest Park in July. Turn left on DeBaliviere. The History Museum is approximately one block straight ahead. The tennis center is behind the Museum. SEASON: Seven home matches are played between July 5 and 25. ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS: Each year a Kids' Tennis clinic is held one day in July. Instruction is by members of the local team supplemented with help from the pros. World Team Tennis also sponsors a Kidcaster Program where kids ages 6-14 can audition to be an official KidCaster broadcaster for Aces events, interviewing and introducing players. HISTORY: The St. Louis World Team Tennis franchise came to St. Louis in 1994. In 1996 the Aces won the League championship. They made the playoffs during the 1997, 1998 and 1999 seasons. HANDICAPPED ACCESS: The Dwight Davis Tennis Center is handicapped accessible. WHERE TO GET LUNCH: Meriwether's in the History Museum's new wing overlooking Forest Park is a great place for lunch. The restaurant is open during museum hours and serves lunch 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and snacks at other times. At the world-famous Saint Louis Zoo in Forest Park, the Lakeside Café, and River Camp serves burgers, hot dogs and such while the Painted Giraffe Café in the Living World features distinctive sandwiches and salads. At the Art Museum, also in Forest Park, Wolfgang Puck’s offers lunch Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and light fare 2-3:30 p.m.; dinner, Tuesday, 5-8 p.m.; brunch, Sunday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and desserts only, 2-3:30 p.m. Coffee and snacks are available at Forest Perk, the café inside the visitor center across the street from the tennis center. WHAT'S NEARBY: Forest Park is home to several other major attractions - the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Science Center, the Missouri History Museum and the Saint Louis Zoo. |
