The site of the AAUW 2009 National Convention, Missouri, has a rich history of women who have broken through barriers. Take a look back in time at some facts about women’s history from the state of Missouri:

History in the Making: The Renaissance St. Louis Grand Hotel and Women’s Suffrage

The Renaissance St. Louis Grand & Suites Hotel is the official hotel of the AAUW National Convention. Located in the heart of downtown, it has its own significance in the fight for women’s equity. Previously known as the Hotel Statler, the hotel was the setting for the historic convention of the National American Suffrage Association in March 1919. At that time, several states allowed women to vote only in presidential elections, and certain states did not allow women to vote at all. At this groundbreaking convention, the League of Women Voters was created to secure the enfranchisement of women in every state.
